Why Travel Therapy Jobs Broaden Your Horizons

By Selena Schlesinger

There is a great demand for travel therapy jobs by new and established health practitioners. It would appear that everyone wants to pack their bags and explore the world. This is a good thing because there is nothing like traveling to open up horizons. Little wonder that professionals spend hours scouring vacancy listings for positions anywhere but home.

Fortunately, if you are qualified as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist or as a speech therapist or psychotherapist, you have many mobility opportunities that you can explore. You will learn early on that there is great demand for your skills just about everywhere. Not just in the health and education sectors but by the corporate sector too.

If you have made up your mind that traveling is the direction you wish to take your career in next then you will need to consider if you need paid work or are ready to do voluntary work. Getting paid has its obvious advantages and as a traveling physical therapist for example, you can expect to command a very reasonable salary indeed. If you have financial responsibilities that cannot be avoided then paid employment is probably not negotiable for you.

However, there are some difficulties with paid employment if your goal is to travel. First, you have to compete with other people with the same qualifications as you. Secondly, you may see a fantastic vacancy, paying a good salary in an exotic location but they will prefer to give the opportunity to someone who is also local rather than recruit from outside. Also, the availability of such jobs are going to exist in places perhaps less exotic than you hoped. If you are happy to move from one part of America to another that is cool but it may be more difficult if you have something else in mind.

You may find more of what you are looking for if you decide to think about voluntary work seriously. What you lose in payment can be gained in experience. You may have little other chance to get to China, India or Africa if money has to be a central factor. Besides, there are other advantages too. Such experience will look great on your CV when you are looking for paid work later.

You should get in touch with some of the major charities that operate in the countries that interest you for volunteer opportunities abroad. Organizations like Oxfam, Save the Children and VSO all have websites that you can consult with ease. As a health practitioner you will find that they should be very interested in your skills which may be in short supply in developing countries.

Travel therapy jobs are a therapy in themselves to everyone who decides to take their career in this direction. The is no price on the value you can get from taking your skills to different parts of the world where they are appreciated.
